May I Please Have a Cookie? By Jennifer E. Morris.

This fat little board book suits children ages 2 to 5. The illustrations feature Mommy alligator and Alfie, her son, in a typical human home. When Mommy bakes cookies, Alfie grabs one without asking. Mommy says, “Don’t grab, Alfie. Can’t you think of a better way to get a cookie?”

So begins Alfie’s hilarious attempts to get dessert. First she disguises himself with a coat, tie, briefcase, hat, and falling-off mustache. He later tries catching a cookie with a hook. Both times mommy tells him to think of a better way to get a cookie. Finally Alfie decides to make his own cookies out of paper. But, they fail to satisfy and he begins to cry. Mommy asks, “May I please have one?” When Alfie gives her the paper cookie, he has “the best idea of all.”

While this is obviously a book designed to teach children good manners, it is done in such a delightful way that they will enjoy watching Alfie solve his dilemma.
