What a powerful, fascinating novel. The story is told from the unusual viewpoint of a 14-year-old female genius whose parents are suddenly killed in a car crash. She is left without family or close friends and destined for foster care. An odd, fascinating group of characters enter her life and through a complicated series of events and become her emotional support group.

The author’s insight into the grieving process and the shock of suddenly being without family and home is brilliant. We very quickly fall in love with Willow Chance, the suddenly orphaned protagonist. Once you have finished the book, you will realize the perfection of her name.

The bizarre people who enter her life, especially the phony and dysfunctional counsellor, are transformed by Willow’s tragedy as much as she is.

Although the story tears out our heart in empathy for this lonely, unusual teenager, it is also filled with humor and hope in perfect balance. I’ll be surprised if you don’t cry at least once and laugh out loud at least twice.

Highly recommended.
