Each double spread in this ten page book features one color. On the left is a solid colored page with the color word in typed white in the middle. On the right are five patterns pictures of things that come in the featured color.
The pictures are little busy, for example, the apple is red and covered with darker red polka-dots, half of its leaf is striped light green and dark green, and it’s stemis striped red and black. Studies show that toddlers enjoy patterns so it definitely attracts their attention. I’m not sure if they will recognize the items though. My 15 month old granddaughter did recognize the banana which has fairly subtle patterns.
The name of the item is typed in black below each picture. The featured colors are red, green, yellow, orange, and blue. Blue, for example, had blueberries, robin’s eggs, a flower, a bird, and jeans.
The more it is read, the more the child becomes familiar with the concept. It does not seem to lose the child’s interest. I recommend this book for toddlers aged 1 to 3.
