The rhyme and rhythm in this book is perfect for small children and toddlers. You can feel the movement of the insects in the words, “I love springy jumpy leapy hugs and slimy crawly creepy bugs.” You can hear their sounds, “I love fuzzy sunny honey bugs and furry worry funny bugs.” All the way through the picture book, the reader is enticed by the delicious descriptions of bugs. Unfortunately, the book ends with a cliché and does an entire about-face by having the child scream in terror at the site of a spider.
The pictures are bright and intense and somewhat realistic. The child’s face could use more detail and why are his eyes so far apart? This is a book that could’ve been great if the author had been bolder with the ending.
